About Coach Janice Kelley

In memory of Coach Janice Kelley

Janice Kelley has passed away.  She and her crew from Hemet High have been a major part of the Idyllwild 5k/10k for years, supporting our race as volunteers and participants.

Janice competed for Hemet High School in 1976-78. She won three events in the 1978 edition of the meet, the first year in which girls competed at the invitational. Janice held school records in the 440, 880, mile, two mile and the 4×400 relay. She still holds the records for the 1600 and 3200 meter runs.

Janice made three trips to the Masters meet and two trips to the state finals earning a 5th place medal in the two mile her senior year. She was also the CIF 2A two mile champion in 1977 and 1978. These performances earned her a scholarship to the California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo, where she earned two All American certificates while running on numerous California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship teams.

Janice returned to Hemet to teach physical education and coach the cross country and track and field teams. Her varsity cross country teams won 26 league titles and her 1995 boys’ team finished third in CIF Division 2 and third in the Division 2 at the state meet. The 1996 boys’ team won the Division 2 CIF title and finished 5th at the state meet. The 2004 team finished 9th at the state meet.

But it was the lives of the athletes and students she taught that was her greatest accomplishment. Janice always had time for her kids. Her warmth, humor and insights will be greatly missed.   We dedicate this year’s race to her great spirit, and to her memory.
